A Monster is Born

Planning a wedding, essentially a big party, has created in me a craze to plan and host parties. For the past 7 months I've looked at picture after picture of weddings with so many cute, interesting, and whimsical elements that I immediately start wondering "how can I do that??" I think it's the colors I fall in love with, or the use of different everyday knick-knacks transformed into something beautiful that catch my eye, the invitations with calligraphy, or the banners...I just think they're fun! I want to try them all. I try to think of excuses to use the ideas, such as..."how soon could Spencer and I invite missionaries over to dinner so I can create a table scape?"...."I need to find a child having a birthday so I can suggest (insert idea)"...."I'll plan a little house warming party and use (insert idea)", "next time I wrap a present I need to remember (insert technique)....I can't stop.
My big wish right now is to learn calligraphy. I love to write letters, send cards, record in my journal, and I think calligraphy would really come in handy. My parents bought me a teach-yourself-calligraphy kit back when I was a whopping 10 years old. I was really interested in it, but I think I needed a little direction (I'm still not much of a "teach-yourself-to" person). Then one night I had my little ink pen, notebook, and calligraphy quill on a TV tray in the living room in front of a movie. When I went to move the tray my ink bottle sloshed and left a monstrous black blob on our tan carpet. Luckily we had a dog so we also had our very own carpet shampooer....but that's the last time I remember using my calligraphy kit. I think the last time I saw my kit before we moved to OK all my ink had dried up...so I parked it in the garbage. I still feel bad about the spot on the carpet, but that's part of being a kid right??
In any case parties just seem like fun and maybe for me it's more the trinkets that come before or during the party than the actual party. But if you're going to doll up your space anyway you might as well invite someone or someones over to enjoy a portion of it with you.
